East Midlands Gas Board shop window display, Commercial Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 1961. For their July 1961 window display in Commercial Street, Sheffield, the East Midlands Gas Board promote the use ofgas with their No Guessing with Gas slogan, with its visible heat and instant control. The stand on each side of the window displays giant hearts and encourages the housewife to Flatter him, Pamper him and Spoil him. Such displays of sexism would not be received well today and the Generous Trade in Allowance sign would probably refer to the man of the house rather than an old cooker.
