Captain Morgan, 17th century buccaneer, c1880. Born in Wales, Captain Henry Morgan (1635-1688) was a notorious pirate and buccaneer who, with the tacit support of the English government, harried and plundered Spain's Caribbean colonies. In the Anglo-Dutch War of 1665-1667 he did the same to the Dutch. Morgan captured Panama in 1671, but after a peace agreement was signed with Spain, he was arrested and sent to London. His fortunes changed again in 1674, when he was knighted by Charles II, who sent him abroad again as deputy governor of Jamaica. A print from Cassell's History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880.
