Edward, Prince of Wales, in army uniform, 1920s(?). Edward served in the Grenadier Guards during World War I. He became king when his father, George V, died in 1936, but abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee, thus heading off an impending constitutional crisis.
