'Captain Bartlett and his Party', 1910. Born in Newfoundland, Robert Bartlett was a noted ice navigator and Arctic explorer of the late 19th and early 20th century. He accompanied Robert Peary on his expedition to reach the North Pole in 1909. In 1914 his leadership was vital in ensuring the rescue of the surviving members of the 'Karluk' expedition after the ship became trapped in the ice and crushed near Wrangel Island off Siberia.
