Joan Fontaine (b. 1917), American actress, c1930s-c1940s. Fontaine established her reputation in two films by director Alfred Hitchcock: Rebecca (1940) with Laurence Olivier and Suspicion (1941) with Cary Grant, winning a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the latter film. Notable other films include Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948) and Beyond a Reasonable Doubt. Her sister is the actress Olivia De Havilland.
