Leopold I, Holy Roman Emperor. Leopold I (1640-1705) of the House of Habsburg was elected Holy Roman Emperor in July 1658. Much of his reign was taken up with wars against the Turks and Louis XIV's France, conflicts from which Austria emerged as a Major European power.
