Marble bust of the Emperor Caligula. Caligula (12-41 AD) was the third Roman Emperor, ruling from 37 until he was assassinated in 41. Roman historians portray him as eccentric, depraved, cruel and insane, but some modern scholars question whether their accounts may have been biased or exaggerated. From the Louvre, Paris.
