Peach stone Buddhist rosary, Qing dynasty, China, 18th-early 19th century. A carved peach stone rosary carved with monks in prayer in landscape in high relief. The carving of peach stones, walnuts and other seeds became very popular in the late 18th century and such work carried on throughout the 19th century. One of the most popular uses was for Buddhist rosaries as seen here. While the decoration shows Buddhist monks, the peach stone material is highly symbolic in Daoist beliefs. Peaches are the symbol of immortality.
