Phoenix-headed ewer with brown highlights, Five Dynasties-Northern Song dynasty, China, 10th-early 11th century. A phoenix-headed ewer, the head is sharply sculpted and placed at the top of a tall four-ringed slender neck. The body is decorated with two bands of overlapping petals. The whole piece is covered by a shiny white glaze of ivory tint with numerous iron brown spots on the raised shoulder and phoenix head and streaks down the centre of the upper band of petals.
