A limekiln on Newland Farm, Exford, Somerset, 1999. This is one of five kilns at Newland Farm, where limestone was burned to create lime. Lime became important as a fertiliser in the 18th century, and was particularly valuable for improving the acid soils of Exmoor. Local outcrops of limestone at Newland and other locations on Exmoor were exploited throughout the 19th century.
