Hadrian's Wall and Cawfields milecastle, Northumberland, 1996. Hadrian's Wall as it runs eastward along Cawfield Crags. A milecastle was built every mile, and gateways controlled access through the Wall. Cawfields milecastle, numbered as milecastle 42, is visible at the edge of the Crags.
