Russian Generals Gurko and Brusilov, 1917. Vasili Gurko (1864-1937) was appointed Commander in Chief of the Russian Army in 1917 after the February Revolution but was dismissed in June after disagreements with the Provisional Government over strategy. Alexei Brusilov (1853-1926) planned the offensive bearing his name that eliminated any prospect of Austrian victory on the Eastern Front in 1916. He briefly served as Russian Commander in Chief after the February Revolution before being replaced by Kornilov in August 1917.
