Ceremony of the Shofar, Rosh ha-Shanah, 1725. Engraving showing Jewish men in a synagogue celebrating the first day of the Jewish New Year. The shofar, a trumpet made from a ram's horn, is traditionally sounded on Rosh ha-Shanah, the Day of Judgment, also known as the Feast of the Trumpets. The engraver Bernard Picart was born a Catholic in Paris. His depictions of Jewish ritual and tradition are an important resource for the study of Jewish life as well as being of interest from an art historical perspective.
