The previous year Bentley had taken part in the Double 12 Hour Race at Brooklands, racing this type of car for the first time, and filling the first two places. Speed Sixes also won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1929 and 1930, with Barnato one of the victorious drivers on both occasions.
