Front view of a corset, c1851. This corset was sympathetically designed by Madame Roxy Caplin with minimal, flexible boning to achieve fashionable curves without 'confining the female figure in a cruelly narrow prison of whalebone and steel'. However, it could still produce a waist circumference of 19 inches.
