George Atwood's machine for demonstrating and investigating the effect of gravity on falling bodies, c1780. Atwood (1746-1807), an English mathematician, devised his machine as an experiment to verify the mechanical laws of uniformly accelerated motion. It consists of two masses connected by an inelastic string over a massless pulley.
