Karl Ernst von Baer (1792-1876), Estonian-born German naturalist and embryologist. He discovered the mammalian ovum (egg) in 1827. From 1834 von Baer was a professor at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Russia. In later life he was a prominent critic of the theories of Charles Darwin.
