'Strangers', 1883. Father Christmas visits the slums of London to find the little girl does not know him. The continuing concern over the plight of the capital's poorest citizens had been brought to the fore once again by the publication of Andrew Mearns' The Bitter Cry of Outcast London earlier in the year. Published by the London City Mission, this had graphically described the terrible conditions in which many of the urban poor lived. From Punch, or the London Charivari, December 29, 1883.
