'The American Juggernaut', 1864.This cartoon depicts the horror of war. The old definition of 'juggernaut' is a huge, unstoppable object. Here, that object is the contemporary machinery of warfare, driven on its way by the spirits of Death and crushing anything and anyone in its path. By this time, the Civil War appeared to have gained a momentum of its own, and the numbers of dead and wounded was very high. This cartoon emphasises the human cost of war on both sides of the conflict. From Punch, or the London Charivari, September 3, 1864.
