Beware!, 1863. The keeper, ( Mr Punch), says: He Ain't Asleep, Young Jonathan; So You'd Best Not Irritate Him. President Lincoln pokes a cautious sword-point at the quiet British Lion. Mr Punch warns that the Lion is not asleep. This refers to the American demands for support, and the denunciations of Britain's neutral stance, together with the difficulties caused to British commerce and the distress of the Lancashire cotton mill workers. All of these irritations might eventually rouse the British Lion to take action that might not be agreeable to the Americans. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 2, 1863.
