'The Profligate Pastry-Cook's', 1860. This cartoon depicts a family of elderly mother, daughter and daughter's young children, taking lunch in a restaurant. This represents the typical middle-class family. However, Punch is poking fun at the typical middle-class family who waste their money on French foods, such as veal and wine. Many things French, particularly literature, were at the time considered to be full of immorality, and, it appears, their food was little different. From Punch, or the London Charivari, April 14, 1860.
