The Chevalier Collection is the work of photographer, Adolph Chevalier, who between 1920-1945 produced evocative and romantic photographs of the Bistrita River Valley, in Moldavia on the North Eastern side of Romania.
This black and white collection depicts customs and traditional labour in the rural setting of the Carpathian Mountains. In this area, wood industry and animal farming are still the main occupations.
After 50 years of Communist regime the local community still have orthodox Christian beliefs and a very conservative lifestyle.
