Beagle laid ashore, River Santa Cruz, 1834 (1839). HMS 'Beagle' careened, Rio Santa Cruz, Patagonia, South America. In December 1831, the Beagle, commanded by Robert Fitzroy and with the young naturalist Charles Darwin aboard, set out on a 5-year voyage around the world. It was during this voyage that Darwin made observations that helped form his theory of evolution. From Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of His Majesty's ships Adventure and Beagle, between the years 1826 and 1836, describing their examination of the Southern Shores of South America, and the Beagle's circumnavigation of the Globe.
