The Amir of Afghanistan with officials, Gandamak, Afghanistan, May 1879. During the Second Afghan War, Afghanistan became a British protectorate under the Treaty of Gandamak, which was signed by the Amir, (centre), and Lord Lytton the Viceroy of India, on May 26, 1879. Also present were Sir Louis Cavagnari, political officer on special duty; Mr Jenkyns; General Daud Shah; and Habeeboolah Mustataphi. Several months later Afghan soldiers rioted over pay; Cavagnari and Daud Shah were both killed.
