Alfred Hitchcock, British-born American film director, 20th century. Hitchcock (1899-1980) was the master of the suspenseful psychological thriller. After moving to Hollywood in 1939 his career reached its peak in the 1950s and 1960s with a string of successful films including 'Dial M for Murder', 'Rear Window', 'Vertigo', North by Northwest', 'Psycho' and 'The Birds'. His last major success was 'Frenzy', filmed in London in 1972. Hitchcock was famous for making brief cameo appearances in many of his films, often appearing within the opening minute.
