Wooden carving from Hylestad stave church, Norway, 12th century. Scene from the story of Sigurd: Gunnar dies in the snake-pit, playing the harp with his toes. Stave churches are wooden medieval churches of post and beam construction. All but one of the surviving examples are in Norway. From the Universitetets Oldsaksamling, Oslo.
