Scene from an Arabic version of Dioscorides' Materia Medica, Mosul Iraq, 1228. Dioscorides and a disciple, holding a mandrake, by Yusuf al Mawsili. In this version the artist has depicted a male pupil in place of the woman personifying Heuresis (explanation) found in Classical/Byzantine texts. Pedanius Dioscorides was a Greek physician, botanist and pharmacologist from Cilicia who lived and worked during the reign of the Roman Emperor Nero. His Materia Medica is regarded as one of the most important books on herbal medicine, and continued to be used until around 1600. From the Topkapi Palace Library, Istanbul.
