'French crow soup', 1813. When Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812, the Russians prosecuted a scorched earth policy as they retreated, in an attempt to deny the French essential supplies. The lack of food would prove an even more serious problem as they retreated back the way they had come in the autumn. From the collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow, Russia.
