Althea Gibson (1927-2003), American tennis player, c1940s. Gibson is seen here at the Kent Grass Tennis Championships in Beckenham, London. In 1950, Gibson became the first African-American woman to be a competitor on the world tennis tour, and the first to win a Grand Slam title (in 1956). She was instrumental in breaking the 'colour barrier' in women's tennis.
